Many people suffer from poor circulation as the aging process occurs. It may also happen from specific health conditions including diabetes, obesity, and hardened arteries. Additionally, having a sedentary lifestyle and smoking can contribute to developing poor circulation. Common symptoms can consist of pain, numbness, or a tingling sensation in the feet. Some patients have cold feet, and may notice they have become discolored. This condition can show moderate improvement by incorporating exercise and stretches into the daily routine. Walking is an effective form of exercise, and it is beneficial to drink plenty of water. It is advised to include foods such as fatty fish, leafy greens, and cinnamon into daily eating habits, which is thought to be linked to possibly improving poor circulation. If you are experiencing the above symptoms, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can help you to manage and treat poor circulation.

While poor circulation itself isn’t a condition; it is a symptom of another underlying health condition you may have. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact Dr. Nicholas Przystawski of Central Florida Foot Care, PA. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) can potentially lead to poor circulation in the lower extremities. PAD is a condition that causes the blood vessels and arteries to narrow. In a linked condition called atherosclerosis, the arteries stiffen up due to a buildup of plaque in the arteries and blood vessels. These two conditions can cause a decrease in the amount of blood that flows to your extremities, therefore resulting in pain.

Symptoms

Some of the most common symptoms of poor circulation are:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Throbbing or stinging pain in limbs
  • Pain
  • Muscle Cramps

Treatment for poor circulation often depends on the underlying condition that causes it. Methods for treatment may include insulin for diabetes, special exercise programs, surgery for varicose veins, or compression socks for swollen legs.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.

Exercising May Help to Prevent Falling

Falling can be a terrifying experience, and can be common among elderly people. One of the most effective methods to decrease the number of falls that happen to older people is to regularly exercise. This is beneficial in strengthening the overall body, and may help to prevent a bone from breaking during a fall. The feet can become affected during a fall, and may cause the patient an inability to complete daily activities. A good prevention technique consists of having a routine physical and eye examination, so existing glasses and medication can be monitored and updated, if necessary. Many people choose to have grab bars installed in the shower and toilet area, in addition to using a bathmat to avoid slipping. If you would like to learn more about how to implement fall prevention techniques, please speak with a podiatrist.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with Dr. Nicholas Przystawski from Central Florida Foot Care, PA. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

What Can Help Swollen Feet?

The medical term for swollen feet and ankles is referred to as edema. It can be a common occurrence after a long plane or car ride, or from standing for much of the workday. Specific medical conditions that can include heart failure, kidney disease, or infection may lead to getting swollen feet and can be a side effect of pregnancy. Mild relief may be found when the feet are frequently elevated, in addition to reducing sodium intake. Many people find comfort in putting support stockings on in the morning before the swelling begins for the day. Walking can increase blood flow to the legs, possibly reducing existing swelling, and it is beneficial to walk as often as possible during the day. If you suffer from swollen feet, please consult a podiatrist who can determine what the cause is and offer effective treatment methods.

Swollen feet can be a sign of an underlying condition. If you have any concerns, contact Dr. Nicholas Przystawski of Central Florida Foot Care, PA. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Swollen feet are a common ailment among pregnant women and people who stand or sit for extended periods. Aging may increase the possibility of swollen feet and patients who are obese often notice when their feet are swelling too. There may be medical reasons why swollen feet occur:

  • Phlebitis - A condition that causes the veins to become inflamed and can also cause leg pain.
  • Liver disease - This may lead to low blood levels of albumin which is a protein. This can cause fluid in the blood to pass into the tissues and several areas of the body can become swollen.
  • Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
  • Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.

Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet.

Many patients elevate their feet to help relieve the swelling and this is generally a temporary remedy. When a podiatrist is consulted the reason behind the swelling can be uncovered and subsequently treated.

Choosing the Correct Running Shoe

It is beneficial to decide which type of running is desired before choosing the right running shoe. An important factor to look for is comfort and it is helpful to try the shoes on to find the most fitting pair. Various running styles can range from sprints to longer runs, in addition to types of running consisting of treadmill or street running. Shoes that have extra cushioning may be adequate for easier running and may not be suitable for sprints because of how heavy they can be. People who enjoy trail running may choose shoes that have soles with extra tread, as compared to flatter soles that are found on road shoes. When running is done on hard surfaces, it may add strain to the ankles. For this reason, shoes that have additional support features might be the better choice and may help to prevent injury too. If you are considering purchasing running shoes, please consult with a podiatrist who can successfully guide you in choosing the right running shoe.

You should always make sure your running shoes fit properly in order to avoid injury. For more information, contact Dr. Nicholas Przystawski from Central Florida Foot Care, PA. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

Improper shoe sizing can cause a myriad of problems for your feet. Shoes that don’t fit you properly can lead to muscular imbalances in your body, which can result in foot, knee, and hip injuries.

Tips for Finding the Right Running Shoe

  • Make sure you have a thumb’s width of wiggle room between the end of your longest toe and the front of the shoe.
  • There should be little to no slipping at the heel
  • Don’t assume your size in one shoe brand will be your size in another
  • Do not lace up your shoes too tightly
  • Walk around in the store with your new shoes before you buy them

Active Children and Sever’s Disease

The foot condition that is known as Sever’s disease can affect children and young teenagers who participate in running and jumping activities. It is considered to be an ailment that comes from overuse in and around the growth plate in the heel. The child may complain of having heel pain, and can have difficulty in walking. A podiatrist can perform a proper diagnosis, which consists of having a physical examination done, in addition to learning about the child's choice of activities. The child will eventually outgrow Sever’s disease, and until then, mild relief can be found when the activity that caused this condition is temporarily stopped. Patients may also find that it helps to elevate the affected foot as often as possible, and it may be beneficial to wear a heel pad in the shoe. It is strongly suggested that your child sees a podiatrist at the first sign of heel pain, so a proper diagnosis can be performed, and the correct treatment can promptly begin.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Dr. Nicholas Przystawski from Central Florida Foot Care, PA. Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.
